Are you good at guessing popular Hip Hop trivia like “make it rain” or “bye, Felicia”? Perfect, then you’ll love Hip Hop Charades, a new interactive phrase-guessing game which has recently expanded to Middle Tennessee.
Conceived and branded by a pair of Tennessee State University alumni, the game involves two teams of two or more that race against the clock to identify more iconic Hip Hop phrases than their opponents to win!
Created in her hometown of Chicago, Leia Avery made the decision to move her enterprise Just Play Entertainment, the distributor for Hip Hop Charades, to Nashville, where she could partner with her longtime friend and fellow entrepreneur Shawntaz Crawford to help scale her concept.
“Nashville is a hot market that is quickly growing and I wanted my company to be a part of that growth,” explained Avery, who decided that middle Tennessee would be perfect for distribution throughout the South. “I felt people would be very receptive to the game and I enjoy being a part of the growing entrepreneurial culture here.”
Crawford, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, has known Leia since their freshman orientation week nearly 15 years ago at TSU. He serves as the publisher of Stay On The Go Magazine, a monthly lifestyle publication for professional millennials of color.
“(Shawntaz) was a big part of my decision to move to Nashville also,” Avery said about Crawford. “I need the help of someone with the marketing expertise and infrastructure to help take the business to the next level.”
Together, Avery and Crawford with their team of brand ambassadors have hopes of making the game a household name in middle Tennessee and eventually expanding distribution to other Southern cities, including Atlanta and Memphis.
The game retails for $24.99 and can be found in campus bookstores at Tennessee State University and Fisk University, in The Alkebu-Lan Images Bookstore & Gift Shop on historic Jefferson Street, in Music City Cleaners in Germantown and will be expanding to several other locations around the city soon.
The game can also be purchased online at hiphopcharades.com, where an even more detailed list of distribution locations can be found.
